Addressing societal and financial aspects of building renovation: Insights from the EPBD.wise Policy Forum in Athens

Stakeholders from the European Commission and Greece's public sector convene in Athens to Discuss Greece’s implementation and challenges of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) 2024 recast.

On 17 May 2024, Pau Garcia Audi from the European Commission’s DG ENER, Rose Hartwig-Peillon from Efficient Buildings Europe, and Cátia Carvalho from ADENE, joined key stakeholders gathered in Athens to discuss Greece’s implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) recast.

Chair Alice Corovessi from EPBD.wise’s Greek partner INZEB, highlighted the current renovation rate of 1.25-1.5% in Greece

The policy forum, chaired by Alice Corovessi of the Institute of Zero Energy Buildings (INZEB), emphasised the importance of energy performance certificates (EPCs) and renovation passports in the decarbonisation of buildings. Discussions highlighted the importance of social support for renovations, the role of the financial sector, and the link between EPBD transposition, the Social Climate Fund, and national building renovation plans. Dr. Margarita Petroliagki from Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy stressed the importance of data security, regulatory compliance, and technological adaptation for effective implementation of the updated energy performance of buildings legislative framework.

Pau Garcia Audi, policy officer at the European Commission’s DG ENER joined EPBD.wise representatives Rose Hartwig-Peillon from EuroACE and Cátia Carvalho from ADENE and leading national stakeholders on 17 May 2024 in Athens to discuss the outlook for implementation of the revised EPBD in Greece, with a particular focus on energy performance certificates (EPCs) and renovation passports.  

Chair Alice Corovessi from EPBD.wise’s focus country partner Institute of Zero Energy Buildings set the tone in her welcome note, highlighting the current renovation rate of 1.25-1.5% in Greece, INZEB’s work on renovation passports and how the renovation passports will help buildings’ owners to prepare energy upgrades.
