Buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption in the European Union. As 90% of the buildings that exist today will still stand in 2050, renovation of the existing building stock is key to achieving the decarbonisation goals. With 75% of Europeans now living in cities, it is even more crucial for cities to fulfil their role in leading Europe’s building renovation challenge. 

This webinar dived into European technical assistance and how it supports cities across Europe by giving them the tools to lead the change towards net zero carbon by 2050 and unlock the huge potential of their existing buildings.  

The webinar presented the multi-level energy renovation impact framework, developed under the H2020 Build Upon² project, that enables cities to measure the diverse benefits of renovation projects across environmental, social and economic factors, and to identify which of these can be scaled up to the regional and national level. 

Speakers from the European Commission, Climate Alliance and the Build Upon² project highlighted what is happening at the European level, what is needed at the local level, and what synergies exist between the different levels of policy making to scale up renovation.

Anuschka Ruge, Project Manager – Climate Alliance

Anuschka has previously worked in international youth work on social justice and its intersection with global challenges like climate change, gender inequalities and economic disparities. She joined Climate Alliance and Build Upon² as an expert in training, capacity building and organisational development to support cities and local authorities implementing climate mitigation and adaptation measures. Her current focus is on the building sector and, more specifically, energy retrofitting of public and private building stocks.
